Accommodations vs. Modification

The terms accommodations and modifications are often incorrectly used interchangeablyinterchange in education.

MODIFICATIONS

Modifications in the classroom are based on changes that are made to ‘what’ the student is learning. This may mean that the general education curriculum is modified in order to the child to access the information.

Modifications may include, alternative assignments, reading texts on the student's individual level, and altering the information being presented.

Modifications refer to "what" students are learning.

Accommodations specifically mean, we are referring to ‘how’ the student is able to access the curriculum.

Accommodations may often include altering the learning environment and/or providing additional tools including additional time, small group settings, and assistive technology.
